In-Depth:

Sorley is the type of cat who will do anything it takes to survive. Being small and weak his entire life, this generally includes appealing to those who are larger (either physically or in terms of status) than himself. His life thus far has been one of constant change, and as a result, he finds it easy to blend in and work with what he's been given, making him a very flexible tom. His sharp instincts and constant surveying of his settings and situations make him a reliable source of information, and he can be helpful when he feels like cooperating. Unfortunately, he tends to worry more about himself than others, and has little motivation to help anyone else if it doesn't directly benefit him. He will go to great lengths to make sure his Tribe stays on top, and will readily admit to Fire-Tribe being the best, but otherwise isn't very reliable. On the flip-side of his apathetic nature is his obsessive one- when Sorley cares for something, he cares very deeply, and will easily lose sleep in favor of spending time thinking about or engaging in whatever it is that's on his mind. The passion with which he speaks about things he actually likes is typically seen as uncharacteristic of the tom, and he'll find any and every opportunity to talk about them. The quickest way to befriend him is probably to ask about his interests, and then just play listener for a while. Though Sorley isn't quite sure what to do with friends, he'll at least include them in his "should be protected" circle that is often only reserved for himself, so there's that.

Otherwise, Sorley is a pretty level-headed tom. He is able to rationalize and make decisions and suggestions that can benefit the group he's in, and works well with others who can see his point of view. His desire to get on his authorities' good sides often leads him to thinking about ways to improve his Tribe's life, and he'll try to pitch ideas that will do just that. He is otherwise fairly lazy, though, and tries to manipulate and persuade others into letting him get by with the least amount of effort possible. He can be rather melodramatic when doing something he doesn't want to, and will do anything he can to get out of doing tasks he deems dreadful, even if it means putting in more work. Because he's so open with his thoughts, though, he makes for a very readable tom, and can be asked for his honest opinion on just about anything without worry of being lied to. He doesn't often spare feelings, but will get visibly uncomfortable and maybe try to avoid giving an answer if the situation calls for it (for example, if his deputy asked if they were ugly, and he thought they were, he'd just melt into a puddle or something, because how is he supposed to tell a superior they're unattractive?). He is awkward more often than not, not really being sure how to deal with others' feelings, but sometimes he'll try.

When he's more comfortable around another cat, they might start to see a more playful side of the tom. To them, he can present as someone more relaxed and observant, and might make remarks about what he's been observing lately. He can come off as judgmental, and is definitely a very gossipy tom. He is a good secret-keeper, for what it's worth- unless, of course, it would benefit him to sell someone out, but if someone can get close enough for him for him to call them a friend, then it likely isn't going to happen. He can be somewhat dense as far as how to treat cats who do win his favor, and is more likely to give them gifts from time to time or do small favors for them than openly shower them in affection, as he isn't really sure how to handle things like that.

History

Pre-Group:

Nora and Jirou's courtship was nonexistent; they knew one another through mutual friends, and had a fun time together that ended in the former birthing a litter of kittens a couple of moons later. Jirou was either too busy or disinterested (likely both) to play a part in his kits' lives, and that was fine with their mother. As her kittens were born in spring, prey was plentiful, and her family and friends helped with food gathering and den repairs when they could. Nora was a resourceful she-cat above all else, and raised her children to be the same.

Jiji was the first but smallest of his litter. As if seeing no problem with it, Nora had named him after his absent father, something that interested the young kit, but never really upset him. He'd no sense of a "traditional" family, and no reason to crave one. He simply existed with his mother, his littermates, and their occasional visitors. That's how it was.

Nora was a rather cut-and-dry she-cat, not very affectionate, and only raised her kittens out of obligation. That wasn't to say she didn't love them, but had simply never desired having a litter of her own, and was just taking this chapter of her life as it went. When her kits were old enough, around a year of age, she left them on their own. She had done what she could- sticking around would only make them dependent, and that was the last thing any of them needed.

At first, they stuck together. Ra, the second-born, was the first to venture out on her own, never to be seen again. Their brother, Lula, followed soon after, leaving Jiji and his final two littermates on their own. They managed to survive another three moons on their own before a fox ransacked their home, injuring all three, but killing their sibling, Oane, and leaving them with no resources and no place to return to. It was just Jiji and Koro at this point. The pair made the decision to travel together- neither particularly close to the other, as Koro had been glued to Oane's side, and Jiji had always been rather isolated from his littermates- but doing some haphazard bonding through shared trauma. When one rested, the other would hunt, and when one hunted, the other would rest. They never found a permanent home, perhaps too stuck on their final sibling's death, and instead chose to keep wandering.

Jiji has just passed his second year of life when Koro found friendship in another. This was the first time they stayed in one spot for too long, and it made the small tom restless. He hadn't seen that look in his brother's eyes before, but it didn't take long for him to realize that he would be leaving this area alone. Without bidding farewell to his final littermate, Jiji left Koro to his devices, glad that he would soon have a new family of his own, but having to get used to looking out for himself now.

He had never been particularly skilled with catching large prey, and was beginning to thin out when all he could catch were mice here and there. He wasn't sure how long it was before he finally collapsed, and woke up in an unfamiliar environment. There were voices all around, something completely new to him. How many cats were in one spot? It had to be unheard of. His captors- he could only assume that's what had happened- brought him sustenance enough to make him sick, and let him sleep again afterwards. When he next awoke, he received an explanation- they were a band of rogues, plentiful without being overwhelming (to them, at least, for Jiji had hardly seen a few of these cats and already thought there were too many), and he had fallen not far from their camp. Luck would have it that they took pity on him, but he wasn't sure what he could offer them in return for their hospitality.

As it would turn out, after recovering and learning the area, Jiji became helpful in planning raids. The rogues survived by plotting attacks on other smaller groups of cats and stealing their prey and any other goods they could get their paws on. It wasn't his ideal life, but the small tom was happy enough not having to join in on any fights, and he figured he had lucked out enough since they hadn't killed him on the spot. So he remained with them for what was just about a year, learning more about himself in that short time than he had in his entire life. He became cunning and resourceful, and learned what the minimum effort he could get by with was. It was an easy existence.

Of course, all good things had to come to an end.

Half the group had left on a raid when the storm hit, the worst they'd seen since... well, ever. A couple of the dens were ravaged by the wind, and they prayed that was the worst of it. None had expected it to be this bad, and so they were fully unprepared for the fire that sprang up when one of the tallest trees just at the edge of their camp was struck by lightning. Within moments, their entire home was engulfed in flames. Jiji can only assume what happened to any of the others, for he immediately fled and never looked back, just running until he couldn't go on anymore. Once again, he was on his own, with nowhere left to go. As luck would have it, there seemed to be a prey shortage, as well, and every river he found was dried up or turned murky by some unknown plague. How had he not seen it before? Everywhere he went, the lands were dying. All hope seemed to be lost.

It found its way to him when he was at his weakest, just as it had before. When he felt on the verge of death, Jiji discovered some of the last trickling remnants of the cats that had resided in southern Nandryx, and they led him to the Door. While he was hesitant to go through some portal into another world, there seemed to be little choice- these lands were barren and destroyed, and he'd only die in them. It was worth a shot, wasn't it?

So he stepped into the new world, and was instantly rewarded with prey-filled lands and green grass. When he had eaten his share of food and quenched his thirst, Jiji followed the knowledge of those around him, and was brandished with a Fire-Tribe tattoo over his left eye. It was ironic that his last group had gone down in flames, but he took it at face value, simply enjoying being able to rely on another large group of cats again. His interest piqued with the introduction of the blacksmith position, and he eagerly gave himself to the idea of it, hoping that this time, he would get to stick around in his new home a bit longer.

Appearance-wise, Sorley's ideal cat would be one who has a simple design of any color. He prefers nonbinary cats over any other. His favorite eye colors are blue and silver.

In terms of personality, Sorley best clicks with cats who give him space, but can be affectionate when he needs them to be.

Physical Attributes

Tattoo Color: Blue-Fire
Tattoo Description: A small flame shape that curls out from his left eye. It spreads up his head and around his ear when active, forming no particular pattern.

Height: 10"
Weight: 8 lbs

Breed(s): Balinese, Burmese, Domestic Shorthair, Ocicat, Snowshoe

Notable Qualities: Big ears, ear tear, thick stripes

Description: Sorley is, by all means, a small cat. He is active and fit, but not particularly muscular, and is built more for outlasting his opponent (or just straight up hiding from/outsmarting them) than anything else. His fur is thick and feels very soft and plush, making him an ideal cuddle buddy (with permission, of course). He has wide-set almond-shaped eyes that are usually half-lidded (but still Definitely Watching You), and his face is often set to the 'resting bitch face' position. He has a round head shape, but his large ears and fluffy cheeks give it the appearance of trying to be triangular.

• His pelt design was created by @rainwolfeh because I wanted to support their dream of designing 50% of HS cats. :3c

• This is my second character named after a poet (Wilde being Oscar Wilde, and Sorley being Sorley MacLean). This has also been completely unintentional.

• Sorley doesn't have many long-term goals or ambitions, but he does seem to think blacksmithing is pretty cool so far.

• As someone raised without any belief in the Spirits, he still isn't sure how to feel about them. It's a little absurd to him that a Spirit known for his fiery passion would choose someone like him to join his Tribe, but he has yet to outright question it.

• Sorley's tail is almost always twitching about. The more he's concentrating on something, the more it seems to move. He never seems to notice unless someone points it out.

• Sometimes he'll scratch at his tattered ear, though it doesn't itch. This is a habit that stuck with him following the infection that had settled in after the initial injury.

RP Example

(from @starborn-alignment)

Faris' silence was one he welcomed. Not that he thought the conparis spoke too much (by all means, Mirko greatly appreciated his talkative nature, as it complimented his taciturn one quite well), but it seemed that he usually had something good to say after an extended pause, and this time was no different. The younger stallion looked away and smiled at Faris' point- admittedly, he didn't think about Eve too much, and her sudden sprouting of wings had failed to cross his mind, perhaps because he had been too focused on one losing feathers, rather than acquiring them. He laughed, gently, his mismatched gaze falling back to the pegasus beside him, and nodded.

"You have a point," he mused, letting out a deep sigh. The pressure on his shoulders felt lighter, now, and he couldn't help but scoff when he really thought about how odd (yet apparently normal) the situation was. "I think most of us don't really verbalize how much the gods factor into our lives, but..." Mirko trailed off, thinking of his own meeting with Cascade, not long ago, and his smile widened. "Maybe they're around more than we think."

Faris' last comment made him laugh, and the guardian quickly pressed against the conparis to bring them both to a pause once more as a couple of colts whizzed by, stepping away when the coast was clear. "We probably are," he chuckled, "Crazy, I mean." Inevitably, his mind wandered, and he gave the pegasus a curious glance, a grin on his face. "What would you do, then, if one of the gods came down and took away your wings? If they gave you horns, or fins?" His smile then faltered a bit- Eve's makeover had been a punishment, hadn't it? Surely Kingston's couldn't be, though, so... was it a reward? It made sense, Cascade was all the dude talked about, but- looking at Faris, Mirko was sure he had his answer. No god in their right mind would take the wings of the stallion beside him, unless they wanted a fight- and Mirko would bet everything he had on his friend's victory.

"Did you want to keep shopping?" he offered instead, glancing at the bouquet before looking forward again.

JACK
[Exile | (Former) Black-Void | Alive | @hereswonderwall (NPC)]

"My dad! He's so cool, and really good at fighting! I really miss him a lot... I hope he's proud of me!"

Relationship: Father
Favor: 90/100

Like the rest of his family, Wilde loves his father dearly. This tom was one who raised him, and a lot of his personality reflects in Wilde's own. He looks up to his dad very much, and wishes he had the same strength Jack does.

HUSH
[Exile | No Tattoo | Alive | (NPC)]

"Pom taught me a lot about fighting, and how to use my speed to my advantage! They're really really cool. I've seen them kick dad's ass, like, a billion times. I want to be like them!

Relationship: Parent
Favor: 92/100

As is probably obvious, Wilde loves his pom very much! While physically he resembles his father, Wilde takes after Hush in the form of combat techniques, though he doesn't quite have their quick thinking. Hush often expressed to their son how proud they were of him, and he feels their love from afar like the warmth of the sun.

IZANAGI
[Exile | (Former) Black-Earth | Alive | @hereswonderwall (NPC)]

"Uncle Gi is really weird, but he's nice! He taught Mantis a lot. He's never really been talkative, though."

Relationship: Adopted Uncle
Favor: 85/100

Though their relationship isn't quite the strongest, Wilde and Nagi love each other like the family they are. Nagi is one of the three cats who raised him, and, though they aren't biologically related, they would easily do anything for one another. Wilde feels the same for him as he does every other member of his family- he just doesn't know Izanagi as well as others.
